Deep Sea Fishing Trip

Our deep sea fishing trip has been canceled due to poor weather. The next outing is the lighthouse hike and tour on Dec. 17th.

Halloween Fund Raiser

The boys and dads had a blast at this unusual fund raiser at the haunted house on in Atascadero. The first night brought over 500 people, the second night over 700! I have not heard what our troop made yet.We were grateful to be invited to take part by the home owner who supplied most of the costumes and make-up. Camp Emmanuel Heights camp out

We had a fantastic time out at Camp Emmanuel Heights the other weekend. Swimming in the pond with a zip line, blob, and trampoline, catching frogs, and walking across a slack line over the water. We also had a great camp fire that night with fun games, stories and of course marshmallows.

Camporee 2011

The boys had a great time at the 2011 Camporee out at Camp French. The adults ran The Wall while the boys earned 6 award ribbons. Go Troop 226!

White Water Trip

All 20 of us survived the Boy Scout whitewater trip this weekend on the Kaweah river. Class 3 & 4 rapids are much bigger and colder than they look! A special thanks to the Dole's who arrainged the trip and let us stay on their beautiful river front property.

Red Rock Campout

Red Rock National Park was a great campout. The weather could not have been nicer, we found the Burro Schmidt Tunnel after some challenging driving on desert roads. It was over 3000ft long and came out on the other side of the mountain. The scenery was beutiful and we brought everyone back alive. Successful trip. Yosemite Backpack

Yosemite Half Dome Backpack
We had a total of 12 Scouts and 4 adult leaders thanks to Mrs. Rogers who got there way early and acquired two additional trail passes so she and Dr. Car could join us. The weather proved to be quite a challenge as it started to rain shortly after we started our hike on Saturday from Glacier Point. It rained on and off throughout the rest of the day and we even got a bit of hail, very exciting for some of the boys. Several miles in we made camp on a level spot located almost straight across from Half Dome, a short time later we discovered that most inexpensive tents are not truly rain proof. During that time we watched a rescue helacopter come and go to The Shoulder of Half Dome and wondered what had happened. Most of the boys did great, doing the best they could at keeping somewhat dry and cooking dinner in the rain. After dinner we all stood around the fire in a big circle and prayed for safety and better weather, seconds later there was about a 10 minuet downpour and then it stopped raining for the duration of our trip. We had time to dry out all our sleeping bags by the fire before retiring for the night.

The next morning we woke to a beautiful sunny sky and hiked down to Little Yosemite Valley where we set up our base camp before making the accent to Half Dome, by that time there were clouds in the sky but they came and went throughout the rest of the day with out a drop. At base camp we were joined by Mrs. Car, her daughter and a friend who had hiked up from the Valley floor that morning, we also learnd that someone had died on Half Dome the day before when they fell while trying to descend the cables during the rain and hail storm. You can learn more about that from the link below that Mrs. Sandovol found. The weather held and all in all we had eight Scouts make it all the way to the top, two that made it part way the cables and decided that was as far as they wanted to go, and three that stayed back at base camp to gather firewood, filter water and dry out the rest of the gear. We had a communal campfire that night and entertained several other backpackers that stopped by to enjoy the fire. We all slept good that night with no bears and just the occasional hoot of an owl.

Day three we rose early had breakfast, packed up our gear and headed down the John Muir Trail past spectaular water falls, clifts and domes. to the valley floor. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Car and Mr. Rogers who had shuttled our cars to the Valley from our starting point. We left the Car and Rogers families in the Valley to continue on family vacations and headed to the first fast food we could find in Oakhearst for some of the best burgers and fries in recent memory.

Again a special thanks goes out to Mr. Cannon and the leaders who, as a team were able to help deal with the altitude sickness, home sickness, hypothermia, cut finger, mild food poising, dehydration and general exhaustion. I also have to give credit to the older Scouts who, true to the spirt of Scouting, helped the other Scouts in many ways. That really set the tone for everyone to share and help each other with great attitudes. We have a great Troop.

Montana de Oro Backpacking

Last weekend we had 17 boys and 4 adults go on a short backpacking trip out of the Montana de Oro campground. That night we had a flag retirement ceremony and retired about 20 flags.

Camporee 2009

We had a great time at this years Camporee in San Simeon. Troop 226 had 23 boys and took 5 awards in the Scout competitions. We were also responsible for running The Wall, always a big hit with the boys.

Shooting Camp

This months camp out was at the local shooting range where we did most of our cooking in dutch ovens and camped under the patio of the club house. A special thank you gose out to Mr Decou who arrainged everything, including free ammo, and taught us Hunter Safty.

Montana de Oro Camp Out

The Montana de Oro camp out was a great success, together we had 14 Scouts and eight adults including two families. We also had several adults drop by to take part in Saturdays activities. Despite the very damp fog and nightly interruptions by hungry raccoons everyone seemed to have had a fun and memorable camp out, (especially the "Hot Dog!" skit by the Moose Patrol).

Troop 226 has a new Eagle Scout!
Grayson Dole had a fabulous court of honor on Saturday. It was a great event with many family, friends and over 18 of the troop Scouts in attendance. These are just a few of the hundreds of photos the Swanson's took throughout the day. Parkfield

The Parkfield cycling camp out was a success, we had eight boys and two adults take part in this local one night trip. We owe a special thanks to John Jamrog who owns the Boar Valley ranch where we stayed. John was also gracious enough to let us use the small cabin with running water and a flush toilet! We road bikes just over 15 miles, visited the town cemetery and treated our selves to sodas at the Parkfield Cafe where some of us enjoyed a game of horse shoes. Standing at the San Andreas fault line and the Crooked Bridge

Parkfield is the boasted as the 'earthquake capitol of the world".

Kayaking in Morro Bay
These photos are from last November when the Troop went on a ½ day kayak trip. We rented our boats from Horizon Kayak Adventures and explored the bay before landing on the sand spit for lunch and a short hike. The weather was perfect and nobody fell in. I think the parents enjoyed this trip more that the boys.
